Fastest Price Changes in the West

I pulled into 7-11 today to get gas because the markee said $2.06 a gallon. By the time I got to the pump the pump read $2.14 a gallon and then it changed before my eyes to $2.06 per gallon. I found out that 7-11 has remote price changing capabilities on their pumps as well as their big display sign. Arguing with the clerk brought the following reponse: "$2.09 is just 3 cents more per gallon. What's your gripe?"

I came out of the doctor's office after dropping off some paperwork. I looked where I had left my car and it had changed from a Cadillac to an Oldsmobile. Same color. Same size. I thought someone had changed cars with me thinking I wouldn't notice. My second thought was maybe I hadn't noticed the word Oldsmobile on the back of my new Cadillac. When I walked over to it and was looking at the side of it I noticed Marilynn's Hyundai, that I had borrowed parked two spaces away.

I was leaving Orem to get on the I-15 Freeway. I was going west on University Parkway, when I turned into the far right lane and the driver of a car behind me starts flashing his bright lights. I braked for the signal light and was sitting in my car for a moment when the car door opened and this twenty something guy sticks his head in my face and says, "You didn't signal before changing lanes." I looked him over and said, "Can I see your badge?"
"I don't have a f***ing badge."
He then got back in his car and I shut the door and drove off as the light changed to green.

UNINSPIRED DRIVERS

I was coming home from my mother's Saturday. I was driving on the freeway at 5 pm and found myself amongst cars full of white shirts and ties all headed South toward Salt Lake. The traffic slowed down and 6 to 8 cars flipped a U-turn and headed up an oncoming access ramp going the wrong way. I think they wanted to get a good seat at the General Priesthood meeting where they would be able to learn how to be good law abiding citizens and good Mormons.

I've noticed on the freeways lately that there are less and less big pickup trucks and SUVs. I think the government has got the oil companies to raise prices so people will go out and buy small cars or at least drive their small other car.

I feel much safer now without a Utah County redkneck breathing down my tailpipe in his monster vehicel with his high beams on and his booming bass speakers blasting.

Now I can concentrate on not running into young blondes driving their daddy's Lexus 50 MPH in the fast lane while concentrating on dialing their cell phone.

Glass Trucks

I have been seeing a number of trucks carrying sheets of glass speeding down the freeway and driving agressively. They have a need to pass one in the right hand lane and get in front of the pack. I guess most of them are behind schedule or something. Semi truck drivers act the same way. When I was a kid my parents used to comment on how truck drivers were the most polite drivers.

I was told today that I am being transferred along with a bunch of others to different managers so I won't be under my favorite manager Clint. I also won't be under Senior manager Scott "Everybody Loves Raymond." They also made a Dilbert- style anouncement about doubling the mandatory orvertime because so many people are quitting because of all the overtime. But they are going to make up for it by giving a party for the team that has the least amount of people quitting. The team with the most quitters will be given more overtime.

I saw a freshly killed deer in Draper on the freeway. That is sad.

Stopped by Macey's to get prescriptions and some corn.

Paid two neighbor kids to pick up the tree limbs blown off my front yard trees.

Mark called and confirmed my 4th of July invite. We are going to have a picnic at Camp Floyd and then back to Mark's for fireworks.

While driving out to Tooele to see my son Dave I happened to glance at the Pull-off view area where people can take in the granduer of the Great Salt Lake. Standing next to a SUV were three 20-something guys stringing up their fishing poles. I wonder what bate they were going to use to catch the only living aquatic creature in the lake, the wiley brine shrimp.

At Dave's he showed me the racoon he had recently caught in a trap. I got a picture but it was blurry.

As I was coming home from my work in Orem the other day I noticed a truck pulling a trailer on the side of the road. On closer inspection I noticed the driver was picking up a dead deer and already had six or seven in the trailer. Too bad nothing can be done to stop the slaughter of these beautiful animals on the I-15. I think they were here first.

Because of a recent stay in the hospital and recuperation at home for a couple of weeks, I have not been able to drive.

I got into a car for the first time last night. The stress was enormous as I faced the uptight, agressive and selfish Utah drivers. I was a nervous wreck after I got home from a short trip to the library and the grocery store. Now I have to build up a new immunity and start all over again if I am going to continue to survive or maybe I can move to Ruby Valley Nevada.

A week ago I lay down on the grass at my work. A sharp pain immediately developed in my lower right abdomen. A little while later my manager was rushing me to Insta-Care medical center. Tests were inconclusive. I managed to drive home and latter that evening Marilynn checked me into Altaview Hospital where I was operated on for a ruptured apendix at 8 AM the next morning.

My team manager at work was fired yesterday. You never know. She seemed very organized and efficient but lacking in people skills. I think she had some attendance issues. I mentioned to the girl who sits near me that I was glad I didn't hire in as a manager otherwise it would be me getting fired. She said, "Jeff, you would have been gone a long time ago."

The good news is that I was assigned to my old original manager Clint Wolfe who I really like.

I recently had to have a cast put on my foot again. I was suppossed to have it changed in a week because by that time it would start to smell quite stinky. I asked my manager if I could be a few minutes late while I was getting back from having my cast changed. She refused the request saying that we were too busy and scheduling wouldn't let me have the time off. I decided to wait until my day off the next week.

I went to work for two days and my manager made a big deal out of pulling me into the conference room and told me she was sending me home because my cast smell was upsetting those in surrounding cubicals and not to come back till I got rid of the smell. I got permission to use vacation pay for my absences and went home. I may come back after two days off. They couldn't afford to have me off for 10 minutes but they did without me for two days. Go figure

Lately I couldn't help noticing that all the freeways and major streets are begining to be lined with sound barrier walls. This is a bad deal for us drivers because everywhere you go it is like driving in a roofless tunnel. The view has been taken away and it is like Martha Stewart being in prison with a car instead of a soap on a rope. Why should the rights of a motorist be taken away because people who built their houses next to a busy street started to complain about the sound. Wouldn't quiet electric cars be a better solution?

Sign of Spring

One of the new signs of Spring is that the side walk in front of the building at work is full of people pacing back and forth talking on their cell phones. The good news is that one can eat their lunch in the lunch room without having to listen to the "cell phone yellers."

On the way home a guy jammed on his brakes in front of me on purpose as I was trying to turn left in front of oncoming traffic. I followed him into his apartment complex and pulled behind his car and asked him when he got out of his car why he slammed on his brakes like that. He admitted doing it so I called him a butthead and told him to grow up. He then called me an AH who needed to learn how to drive.

This lady calls me and wants the zip code to "Leaking Springs, Texas." I told her there was no Leaking Springs anymore because a plummer had fixed it. There was a long pause and then she finally got it and started laughing.

We were going to play Uno at Mark's. Joey had the cards spread out on the table, face up and had picked out a bunch of cards. Mark said, "Put all the cards in the middle so we can shuffle and deal.

Socket Bashing

When I got home tonight I was getting out of my car with a spark plug socket in my hand. Just then some jerk came racing down the street as fast as he could go. If I had gotten out of my car, in time, I am afraid I would have tried to throw the socket through the side of his car.

Years ago when I was selling insurance I was standing with a guy in his garage when a similar incident happened. This kid came roaring down the street. The guy grabbed a wrench and was able to wing it into the side of the car which screeched to a stop. The kid kind of sheepishly asked why the guy did that.

Windmills of My Mind

During my many drives to Utah County I have always watched for two windmills after going over Point of the Mountain. One was a huge windmill near Camp Williams that was hardly ever operational. The other was on the East side of the freeway by the Alpine exit and was on the property also occupied by a house. I always wondered if the guy who owned it had a battery powered house and the windmill charged them. Today this house and windmill had vanished...torn down without my permission or knowledge. A new project of fancy homes was being planned for and the hillside behind was being graded and staked. I guess this is progress.

No more windmill to look for anymore.

The Short List of Bad Drivers

Number 3:

Off duty firemen or their wives. They are easy to spot because of the firefighter's logo on their license plates. They are always aggressive drivers who have to pass you on the right or the left at high speeds to get in front of you.

I saw what I thought was one driving sanely tonight but when I got closer I saw the emblem on the license plate was not a firefighter's emblem but a similar veterans logo.

Number 2:

Construction workers and tradesmen who drive big four-wheel trucks with knobby tires and are pulling a Wells Cargo-like enclosed trailer. These guys like to drive 75-miles-per-hour in the fast lane in snowy, slippery weather while throwing up a huge spray on the cars behind them.

And Number 1:

Truck drivers who drive huge double trailor gas trucks or double bulk bin trucks from Salina or Lehi. They like to ride your bumper at 75-MPH and are never seen in the slow lane unless they are exiting the freeway.

I stopped at Wendy's in Lindon to get some chicken nuggets after work. I soon discovered they had only given me 4 nuggets instead of the usual 5. I parked and went in. Without even asking for them the manager gave me a package of five more nuggets plus a small chocolate shake for my trouble. I am eating at Wendy's again. I still think they have the fastest window service. "Super nugget me!"

The retired owner/manager of a well-known Salt Lake radio station comes into Walmart, all the time, with a bunch of quarters and plays the crane machine where you try to grab stuffed animals and win them. He is getting quite good at it and then he gives the stuffed toys to little kids and also to my wife, who works there, and she passes them on to our grandkids.I think this is pretty cool of him.

They have removed the 55 mph signs on I-15 in Utah County that were between Lehi and Orem. Now I can hit 70 MPH all the way from Sandy until I get to Orem where drivers seem to get an attack of the stupids and start crashing almost every day. Something about Orem drivers and freeway driving.

Stupid Freeway Drivers Cause Sandy Man to be Late

I left 1/2 hour early for work today and I was still 35 minutes late for work!

Two hours to drive to Orem is ridiculous.

I have decided that 1600 North in Orem between State and 800 East is the worst place in the state for people pulling in front of you from a side street with so little room that you have to break hard to keep from hitting them. Also people in huge pickup trucks will make a left hand turn right in front of you in extremely busy traffic.

People who live off of 1600 North in Orem should move to Eagle Mountain where they belong. Well, at least they don't flash their bright lights at you.

Eagle Maniacs and Flashers-An Un-Scientific Study

When I installed the headlights in my car I set them on the low side by accident. Therefore when my four-beam-high-beams are on they don't shine in the oncoming driver's eyes. Because the low beams don't throw enough light I have gotten in the habbit of driving in high-beam mode. When we went to Eagle mountain about 90% of the drivers flashed their high-beams at me and left them on to try and blind me as soon as they got close enough to see I had four headlights on. Obviously they weren't bright enough to bother them because they did not flash me earlier.

When I drive in the Orem area only about 5 percent of the drivers flash me.

This leads me to conclude that most of the people living in Eagle Mountain have psychological problems and are in need of therapy to help them overcome their anger and vindictiveness

People in Orem, on the other hand, must have absorbed religion from nearby BYU by osmosis and seem to be living their religion.

Now I always wear a pair of polarized sunglasses at night when I drive to Eagle Mountain. Maybe those Eagle Mountaineers should move to Hell, Michigan.

Cell Phone Hell

Companies should set aside special areas for people who feel they need to constantly talk on their cell phones. Signs could be posted that say: "CELL PHONE YELLING AREA" Because people can't hear the person they are talking to very well they feel they have to shout into their cell phones causing everyone in the hallway, lobby or lunchroom to intimately know their business. Have you ever noticed how these people pace all over the place as they talk which is good if they are traveling away from you with their pitiful conversations so you don't have to listen to them.

I like what Jay Leno did the other night during his show. Some poor guy in the audience had his cell phone start ringing. Jay ran into the audience and grabbed the phone away from the guy and said to the person calling: "This is Jay Leno. You are interrupting a national television show so please hang up and quit bothering us."

Urinal Etiquette

In public restrooms, such as we have at my work, there are multiple urinals along the wall. Four to be exact. Most people, if they are the first one to use the restroom, will chose to use the urinal nearest the door. proper protocol demands the the next person that comes in uses a urinal that is not right next to the one already in use but instead use the third one over. The third guy at the urinals is to use the one furthest away on the other end even though it is next to one of the users. This way the third man will not be immediately between two users, only one.

It bothers me when I am the first one in the restroom, and use the first urinal, and a guy comes in and stands next to me at the second urinal. Maybe I am homophobic but this strikes me as being a little gay.

Ice Fishing Time

Fall fishing came and went quickly this year which means the best time of the year, for me at least, ice fishing. What is so intriguing about sitting on a block of ice around an 8-inch hole waiting for something to make the tip of your fishing pole move? EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a rush it is to see a fish take your bait and bring it up through the ice. This week's tips will be related to equipment. If you want to have an enjoyable time ice fishing the first thing you will need to make sure is that you are warm. Start with your feet, wool socks and good warm boots. Next your legs, no Levi's! Wear sweats with snow pants. Next for your upper body, a nice warm coat with hood and layer; shirt, sweatshirt, jacket, and then coat. If it gets too warm, you can remove layers at a time. 2 pairs of gloves, one that can be worn on the inside and another pair that are waterproof for the outer layer. Last, but not least, a hat. If you want to keep your feet warm, put on a hat. It really works. If you are cold, it won't matter how many fish you catch. You will be miserable.
To get through the ice you will need an ice auger. A hand crank auger with razor blades can cost anywhere from 30 to 100 dollars. TIP: Never bang the razors' edge on the ice to get your hole started. It will damage your blades and your auger will not work without new blades. Just slowly start your hole and let the blades do the work. A scoop is necessary to get the chunks of ice and slush out of your hole. You can find one for 3 to 5 bucks. A sled is great for pulling all or your gear around on the ice. Make sure to fasten all of your gear down to the sled or it will fall out when you are walking across the ice or snow. I will talk about fishing poles, lures, baits, and techniques in the next edition of the fishin corner. Until then, get your snow gear ready! Final Tip: add a magnet to your tackle box. If you spill all of your hooks and lures, you can use your magnet to pick them all up. Shawn is in dire need of this tip. After he casts, his tackle is flying everywhere. (I think it has something to do with his flail-ing casting style)

This lady calls in and is asking about "Priority Mail Flat Rate envelope." I tell her that it is a flat rate up to 70 pounds. She asks how someone could get 70 pounds into such an envelope. I tell her that there are heavy elements such as Kryptonite and that, by-the-way, this is the service Lex Luther uses to mail Kryptonite to Superman to try and kill him!

Wigging Out at the Post Office

I was fielding a complaint from a Dominican woman in Helena Montana who thought the post office clerk who waited on her was rude and disacriminatory. She asked me what does the post office do when clerks behave badly. I told her that the postmaster puts on a terrible looking hair-piece and sneaks up behind the offender, taps her on the shoulder and shouts, "You're fired!!!"

Run Forrest Run

We had a meeting today at work. 500 to 600 employees estimated attended. There was a skit and movie featuring the impersonators of Forrest Gump, Donald Trump, Sean Connery, Mike Myers and others. Forrest Gump was delivering express mail all over Utah by running up and down the Wasatch Front and in the Deseret Marathon. It was hilarious. Myers was the "Spy That Shagged Me" and had sexy women hanging all over him. Trump fired Connery and hired Myers.
